Carrot Nutrient-Dense

Reviewed by Madhu Sharma, Registered Dietitian

The carrot (Daucus carota) is a nutrient-dense root rich in antioxidants, fiber, beta carotene, and other vitamins and minerals. Research suggests that carrots may improve vision, promote skin health, and reduce the risk of some forms of cancer.

A Brief On CarrotsPeople have been eating carrots for over 5,000 years. The vegetable originated in the Middle East and Afghanistan and was initially available only in purple and yellow colors. The familiar orange carrot was developed only later, in the 1600s.

Researchers today are breeding carrots in different colors, including yellow, bright red, and dark orange to make them more appealing. But what is grabbing attention is the set of pigments in carrots that offer important benefits.

What Are The Health Benefits Of Eating Carrots?

May Promote Eye HealthVitamin A, in recommended quantities, is essential for good vision, and carrots offer the nutrient in abundance. If a person is deprived of vitamin A for too long, the outer segments of the eyes’ photoreceptors begin to deteriorate. This leads to night blindness .

Insufficient vitamin A can disrupt the normal chemical processes involved in vision. Restoring adequate vitamin A intake can facilitate vision health.

May Reduce Risk Of Cancer.Carrots contain numerous phytochemicals that are well-studied for their anticancer properties. A few of these compounds include beta-carotene and other carotenoids. These compounds promote immunity and activate certain proteins that inhibit cancer cells. Studies show that the juice from carrots can combat leukemia as well.

The carotenoids present in carrots may reduce the risk of stomach, colon, prostate, lung, and breast cancers in women

Some believe carrots may also reduce oral cancer risk. However, more research is warranted in this regard.

May Promote Skin Health.Carrots are rich in carotenoids. Research suggests that fruits and vegetables rich in these compounds can improve skin appearance and also help people look relatively younger.

However, overconsuming carrots (or other foods high in carotenoids) can result in a condition called carotenemia, wherein your skin appears yellow or orange .

May Enhance Hair Growth.Carrots are powerhouses of Vitamins A and C, carotenoids, potassium, and other antioxidants. Anecdotal evidence suggests that the veggies may contribute to hair health. However, more research is needed in this regard.May Aid Weight LossRaw, fresh carrots are about 88% water (1). A medium carrot has only about 25 calories. Hence, including carrots in your diet is a smart way of filling yourself up without piling on calories.

Carrots also contain fiber. In a study, meals containing whole and blended carrots resulted in higher satiety levels in the test subjects.

May Regulate Blood PressureOne study claimed that carrot juice contributed to a 5% reduction in systolic blood pressure. The nutrients present in carrot juice, including fiber, potassium, nitrates, and vitamin C, were found to aid this effect .May Aid Diabetes TreatmentFollowing a healthy, balanced diet and maintaining healthy weight can reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes. In studies, low blood levels of vitamin A were found in individuals with diabetes. The abnormalities in glucose metabolism would need an increased need to fight oxidative stress, and this is where the antioxidant vitamin A may help.

Carrots are high in fiber. Studies show that increased fiber intake can improve glucose metabolism in individuals with diabetes . The veggies can be added to a diabetes meal.

May Boost ImmunityVitamin A regulates the functioning of your system and prevents infections. It achieves this by boosting your body’s immunity. Get this immune-boosting vitamin from carrots. Carrots also contain vitamin C that contributes to the production of collagen, which is essential for wound healing. This nutrient further contributes to a strong immune system.May Strengthen Bones.Vitamin A influences bone cell metabolism. Carotenoids are associated with improved bone health (18). Though there is no direct research stating that carrots can help improve bone health, their vitamin A content may help. More studies are needed to further understand this mechanism.May Lower Cholesterol LevelsAs per rat studies, carrot consumption can reduce cholesterol absorption and increase the antioxidant status of your body. These effects can also promote cardiovascular health. Raw carrots are also rich in a fiber called pectin that may help lower cholesterol. Are Good For The Teeth And GumsChewing of carrots may promote oral cleanliness. Some believe carrots may also freshen breath, though there is no research to substantiate the statement. Anecdotal evidence suggests that carrots may neutralize the citric and malic acids usually left behind in your mouth, promoting oral health.May Promote Liver Health And Eliminate Toxins.Carrots contain glutathione. The antioxidant was found to have the potential to treat liver damage caused by oxidative stress . The veggies are also high in plant flavonoids and beta-carotene, both of which stimulate and support your overall liver function. The beta-carotene in carrots may also combat liver diseases.

National Association Of Nigerian Nurses

National Association Of Nigerian Nurses And Midwives Honours Azikiwe Patricia, Ikebude Gladys

Monday, February 22, 2021, was a joyous day of celebration and thanksgiving unto God Almighty, as members of the National Association Of Nigerian Nurses And Midwives, Under One Unit Roof, Issele-Uku, honoured their two retired senior colleagues in appreciation of their wonderful contribution to humanity and for God granting them peaceful retirement with good health after 35 years of meritorious service to their fatherland.

The Send – Off Party, which took place at the premises of the Primary Health Care Under One Roof, now known as Health Authority, Issele-Uku, in Aniocha North Local Government Area of Delta State, witnessed prayers, praises and worship session, where the Nurses thanked and appreciated God for His mercies and loving kindness upon the retirees and all of them that are still in service.

In her welcome address, Mrs. Maria Nwachai, The Director Of Nursing Services, Aniocha North Local Government Area, welcomed invited guests and the retirees to the day’s ceremony, disclosing that she and her colleagues deem it necessary that because the two retirees, namely, Mrs. Ikebude Gladys, their former Head of Department, when they were under Primary Health Care, and Mrs. Azikiwe Patricia, the former Deputy Director Of Nursing Services, were jolly good fellows with whom they all worked together in love and oneness, they decided to put in little resources in order for them (the Nurses) “to rejoice with them, honour them and to let them know that we appreciate them”.

Continuing, She advised them to continue with their kindness, saying that Nurses are caring, so they should continue to care for everyone around them. She urged them not to relent in practicing their Nursing profession, maintaining that “A Nurse is a Nurse even at old age”, so that they will be able to contribute their quota in saving humanity from ill health and untimely death.

The Director Of Nursing Services, also Prayed for God’s grace upon them that are still in service, that they will continue to care and not compromise their services for any reason, but for God to strengthen them continually to serve humanity and save lives.

The retirees who were greatly overwhelmed with joy for the honour accorded them by the Nurses, in their speeches expressed profound gratitude to the Director Of Nursing Services Aniocha North local government area and her colleagues for the wonderful recognition and the reception party they organized for them.In a brief remark, Mrs. Ikebude Gladys, the former Head of Department, said “Indeed, I am greatly humbled to be honoured by you all today, may God honour you people, I want to use this medium to say Thank you for your encouragement throughout my service years, for your cooperation, commitment and support.

I want to still advice you, to continue to cooperate in unity, support one another, don’t be tired, above all dwell in love and forgive one another this is very important, for when you do this, I bet you God will always bless you. Again, for this surprise you people gave us, God will surely bless you all abundantly”.

In the same vein, Mrs. Azikiwe Patricia Onuwa, in a brief speech, said “I greet all of you for all that you have been doing and for what you have done today, I am so surprised I never expected this, you all are good and you will continue to be good. I urge you all to be good, to be loyal, to be humble, to be truthful, do not take what does not belong to you anywhere you are, in any health centre never you remove what does not belong to you, if you do nemesis awaits you. I am telling you the truth, be a humble Nurse, a caring Nurse, a patience Nurse and the sky will be your limit.I appreciate you all for making this occasion grand, my God will reward all of you and He will replenish your pockets.

Another thing which I will not fail to say, is that you should plan well, plan your schedules well, because if you retire and you didn’t plan you will fall into serious challenges, I mean it, plan very well for what will give you food when you retire because if you fail to do it, I am sorry for you, because it is not every time that you will be calling on your children for money, supposing they don’t have, what will you do? Then you will be on the street borrowing? God forbid that.

When you plan well, you will reap bountifully and be comfortable always, because I planned for today, God has been faithful, I thank God for His mercies. God bless you all and I Pray that the Lord will continue to lift you up”.Speaking further the Chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and a Unit Leader in Ward 8 Igbodo, Ika North East Local Government Area of Delta State, informed the Nurses, saying “I want to let you know that presently I am fully into Politics and I strongly believe that by the grace of God things will work out fine and when it materializes I will remember you”, she concluded.

The memorable event witnessed several complimentary remarks from the Nurses who individually recounted the wonderful working relationship they enjoyed while working with the duo during their service years, they Prayed God to grant the retirees more fulfilled years of good health and divine fulfilment.

There was presentation of gifts to the retired Nurses by their excited colleagues who are still in service. While, a toast for long life, was observed by everyone at the reception party in honour of the retired Senior Nurses. There was also the taking of group photographs by the Nurses and the retirees.

HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE (HYPERTENSION)

LECTURE PRESENTED BY MRS. MARIAN ONOTU OKWUAZUN AT EWERE OKONTA BLOGS (EOB)THURSDAY LECTURE SERIES HELD ON 14TH JANUARY, 2021TOPIC: HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE (HYPERTENSION)

MRS. MARIAN ONOTU OKWUAZUN

Hypertension, often called high blood pressure, occurs when blood moving through the arteries places too much force against the artery walls. What that means is that the heart is working harder than it should to pump the blood around the body through the arteries.Hypertension is also called a silent killer/disease due to the fact that it is a disease that could persist without signs and symptoms and thus could remain undetected for a long time with gradual damaging effect on various system of the body from which death could result.DEFINITION: Hypertension simply means the persistent elevation of blood pressure above the normal range of 100-140 for systolic pressure and 60-90 mmHg for diastolic pressure.Blood pressures reading are given in two numbers (120/80mmHg).

1. Systolic Blood Pressure(SBP):This is the top number, it is the maximum pressure the heart exerts while beating.

2.Diastolic Blood Pressure(DBP): This is the bottom number, it is the amount of pressure in the arteries between beats.

PREVALENCE RATE:From the random-effects meta-analysis, an overall hypertension prevalence of 28.9% with a prevalence of 29.5% among men and 25.0% among women. Then 30.6% and 26.4% among urban and rural dwellers, respectively.

TYPES:There are two main types of high blood pressure.

1. Primary or Essential High Blood Pressure:This is most common type of high blood pressure and the cause is unknown.2. Secondary High Blood Pressure: This is caused by another medical condition (e.g Diabetes, Kidney disease) or use of certain medicines or drugs.

CLASSIFICATION:Hypertension can be classified according to the degree of rise of systolic or diastolic pressure.Under the classification of Hypertension, we have Normal, Pre-hypertension, Stage 1 & 2 hypertension.Normal systolic blood pressure ranges from 90-119mmHg for systolic and 60-79mmHg for diastolic pressure.Pre-hypertension:Systolic pressure ranges from 120-139mmHg while diastolic pressure is 80-99mmHg.Stage I hypertension: Systolic pressure ranges from 140-159mmHg while diastolic is from 90-99mmHg.Stage II hypertension: Systolic pressure ranges from above 160mmHg while diastolic pressure is from above 100mmHg.RISK /PREDISPOSING FACTORS1.Atherosclerosis (A build up of fat/cholesterol plaque in the walls of arteries, causing obstruction of blood flow).

Cigarette smokingExcessive sodium (Salt) intakeStress and tensionObesityFamily history of hypertensionAge (high blood pressure is common among the elderly).Sex (start early in males from age 35 and females from age 45)CLINICAL MANIFESTATION (SIGNS AND SYMPTOM)Hypertension can remain asymptomatic for years except for the high blood pressure, it can manifest in the following symptoms:Headache (especially early morning frontal or occipital headache)WeaknessDizzinessPalpitationBlood pressure is consistently above 140mmHg systolic and 90mmHg diastolicNausea and vomitingEpistaxis (Bleeding from the nose) memory disturbanceVisual disturbanceTREATMENT/PREVENTIONDrugs: for example anti hypertensive drugs e.g methyldopa(ie Aldomet) hydralazine (appresolone) etc. to reduce blood pressure2.Diuretics: for example frusemide (laxis)Diet: sodium(salt), calories, fat and cholesterol restrictionExercise/weight reduction: this must be medically regulated to prevent obesity and help burn off fat. Patient should avoid strenuous exercise which can increase blood pressure, simple aerobic exercise (e.g walking) should be encouraged.Treat the cause if it is secondary hypertensionRegular blood pressure check, say daily, weekly or monthly depending on the diastolic pressure, the diastolic of ≥ 120mmHg needs immediate treatment.Discontinuing tobacco use and alcohol consumption has been shown to lower blood pressure.Reducing stress, for example with relaxation therapy, such as meditation and other mindbody relaxation techniques.Increasing omega 3 fatty acids can help lower hypertension. Fish oil has shown to lower blood pressure in hypertensive individuals. The fish oil may increase sodium and water excretion.COMPLICATION OF HYPERTENSIONRupture of arteries (or blood vessels) that could lead toa. Epistaxis (bleeding from the nose)b. CVA (Cerebro Vascular Accident) and other cerebro vascular diseases)Hypertensive encephalopathy marked by nausea, vomiting and severe headache.Kidney complication e.g nephrosclerosis(hardening of the walls of the small arteries and arterioles).Eye complication e.g retina damage.Left ventricular hypertrophy: caused by cardiac compensation over a long time can lead to heart failure.Death.However, the causes, treatment and management of High Blood Pressure may not be limited to only just what we have listed above, there are many more emerging and contemporary factors underling HBP as it relates to human health. Thus, proper and adequate attention and care must be given to issue of our health. No sacrifice is too much for your health.Thank you.
