A 22-year-old barber from Idumu-Ebor quarters of Owa-Alero in Ika North East Local Government Area, Elvis Unah was in the evening of Sunday, August 22, 2021 shot dead.

According to her, “One Shaka, an electrician who is also a member of the Anti-Cult Group in Owa Zone from Kogi State was the one who killed Elvis.

“At about 7pm on that faithful day, I heard my late son’s voice in an argument and when I called to know what the argument was all about, he said Shaka was chasing him and his friend, Chidinma and collected Chidinma’s shoe.

“Immediately, I cautioned him not to have anything to do with Shaka and I promised to assist him to recover Chidinma’s shoe, all for peace to reign.

“A few minutes after returning to my room, all I heard was a gunshot and wondered where the sound was coming from only to be told that Elvis my son had been shot dead.

She further said the police from Owa-Oyibu Divisional Headquarters came and took his body to the mortuary and also arrested his killer, Shaka who is now cooling of his heels at the Delta State Police Command, Asaba.

She disclosed that during interrogation at the State Police Command, Asaba, on Tuesday, August 14, 2021, Shaka regretted killing Elvis, saying that his target was his friend Chidinma.

According to a first hand information, late Elvis was said to be a member of the Aro Cult group while Shaka belong to Aye Cult group, and both of them have had unsettled issues before the attack. Elvis was shot on his head.

BEDC should be sanctioned over cases of accidents from high tension cable wire

Ika Landlords/Landladies

The Ika Landlords/ Landladies Association, has called for the sanctioning of the Benin Electricity Distribution Company, BEDC over cases of accidents from high tension cable wires.

The association which spoke through her president, Mr Vincent Arimokwu JP, noted that the nonchallant attitude of BEDC on issues of accidents and vandalization of transformers and electricity poles is alarming and causes for a serious concern. Arimokwu mentioned a recent case where a 19-old-girl was almost electrocuted in Boji-Boji, Owa. He disclosed that the teenager who is undergoing a serious and painful experience that has led to the amputation of one of her hands , was abandoned by BEDC after the company’s cable fell on her..

He stated that since the ugly incident occurred his association has not abandoned the electricity victim’s family as efforts are being made to save her life.

“ Ika Landlords/ Landladies Association has been at the forefront of the high tension cable wire accident that occurred in Boji-Boji, Owa last week. Unfortunately, BEDC that was supposed to take responsibility and pay the medical bills of the victim did not show any concern. If the high tension cable wires were well placed issues of electrocution will never be there. Many high tension cables in Ika Land are dangling owing to the fact that they were not well placed. If BEDC was serious, the high tension cables would have been well demarcated with sticks, if that was done there will not be issue.

“We have visited the family home of the victim and they are seriously not happy with the condition of their beloved daughter. Something urgent should be done because it requires life. Even the police was not cooperative until we made them to understand what is going on. BEDC has now agreed to pay the victim’s hospital bills. My association is not against anyone but asking that the right thing should be done”

Meanwhile, the mother of the victim and a widow, Mrs .Nkechi Ijenamaka, has cried out to government, groups and concerned individuals to come to her rescue as she has no money to attend to the medical bills of her daughter.

“I am a widow. I have no money to pay for my daughter’s hospital bills. Since the accident happened I have been borrowing money from people. I don’t want her to die. Government and members of the public should please help out.”

She thanked the President, Ika Landlords/ Landladies Association, Mr Vincent Arimokwu,JP and the entire members of the association for the role they have played thus far.

THE MEDICINAL BENEFITS OF ONION

By Fr. Anselm Adodo

Onion is one of the potent natural anti-biotics. It strengthens the immune system, thus helping to ward off common infections. For over 15 years, I have been recommending Onion for many sick people, and the results have been positive. Chew a small bulb of a raw onion every night. It’s as simple as that. As a starter, you may take half a bulb instead of one bulb and gradually increase it to one bulb.

Onion has been proven to lower harmful cholesterol level in the blood. This is understandable when one considers the fact that Onion is rich in fibrinolytic substances that help to break up blood clots and to prevent coagulation. This makes Onion indispensable for many Nigerians who consume a lot of fat and butter.

Onion helps to lower blood sugar. This hypoglycaemic or anti-diabetic property of Onion is due to the presence of glycoquinine. Those who are afraid of developing diabetes because their parents have diabetes should make friend with Onion, as it is excellent prevention against diabetes.

Onion strengthens the blood cells that protect the body against micro-organisms. If these cells are weak, the body becomes prone to viral infections. Onion also destroys cancerous cells in the body. In Nigeria, cases of cancer, especially of the breast, are increasing daily. I wish to suggest that our women should take Onion as much as possible.

Onion purifies and strengthens the liver and the kidney and as well as cleanses the blood. Onion is an excellent remedy for hepatitis, which is becoming common in Nigeria these days. Do you suffer from resistant typhoid fever, inability to sleep well, low sperm count? Try Onion and see the difference it makes! Onion has been of help to men who experience weak erection or low libido. Regular intake of Onion is recommended for women who experience premature menopause and anovulation (inability to ovulate). It works.

In cases of sickle cell anaemia, Onion has been of invaluable help. Onion is rich in enzymes, which helps in the production of blood. Onion contains iron and trace elements, which are often lacking in sicklers.

Many people are surprised to hear that Onion is an excellent remedy for insomnia because most of us take Onion as spices very often. However, the quantity we take is not enough to effect significant changes in the body. The recommended dose is to eat one whole bulb of a raw onion every night. Alternatively, you could blend four bulbs of onions with one litter of honey. Dosage is one shot (20mls) twice daily.

Man with hole in the heart cries out for help

By Marvin Enyosa

There is a common saying that a friend in need is a friend indeed. Thus, if you can support a pal through a challenging situation, it shows that you are more than a friend, but a family.

Just like Christ has urged us through the holy Bible, to stretch out a helping hand, here is a 56year old man and father of two children, Mr. Sunday Jacob Okwuagbor, who have been depressed having been diagnosed with an ailment named Acyanotic congenital heart decease (patent ductus), which literally means “Hole in the heart“.

The sick Okwuagbor hails from Oruru Idumu-Agbamuse in Agbor, Ika South Local Government Area of Delta State, and a Printer who has lived many years in Lagos State.

According to him, the ailment started 8 years ago and has spent fortune while trying to get back to his feet.

However, Okwuagbor seeks financial support, to enable him undergo medical surgery oversea which cost about Ten Million naira (10,000,000).“I am appealing to all well meaning Agbor indigenes, Ika people and Nigerians at large to come to my aid with financial donations to my personal account; Account number: 2178374442, Zenith Bank or call me on 07063316211.

Addiction And Its Impact

Addiction is a bad habit . Once addicted, it becomes very hard to stop; only by the special grace of God .Those people who are addicted to alcohol is a serious matter. Some persons prefer drinking of alcohol to eating of food. They drink alcohol as if there will be no tomorrow. They are so addicted to alcohol that when they are broke (no_money)They resort to drinking on credit. Addiction to alcohol had made some persons behaving foolishly Imagine a man after getting drunk, staggered home. His wife was at the door, seeing his wife ,he voiced out “Madam, your face looks familiar, ‘have forgotten where I once met you”. Angrily, his wife draged him into the house . you see what alcohol addiction can cost. What of those who are addicted to smoking of cigarettes, after eating if they don’t smoke cigarettes, it seems as if they have not eaten anything.

They smoke anything smokeable because they are addicted to smoking! Again this me, too much of it, may look foolish. Am mentioning of persons addicted to sex They have sex indiscriminately. Be it, male or female, these persons lack self-control and discipline for sex. They can have sex anywhere anytime; because they are so addicted to have sex. Even, some married men who are so addicted to sex, whenever they are in the mood and it happened that their wife were not around, they shamefully do it with their daughters. Instances abound. On the news, a man was reportedly to have been having sex with his two little daughters. This shows the extent of addiction and associated bad habit. Some women with high level of libido and are so addicted to having sex; often pay young boys to have sex with them once they are in uncontrollable mood to have sexual satisfaction.

The worst are those addicted to taking of drugs. It leads them doing things unimaginable not palatable to the society. My coming up with this topic was as a result of a true to life story on how addiction can go .So relax and read on!

Mr Amose and his wife, Vero (not real names) live in Asaba. Mr Amose is a tricycles (keke) rider and his wife manages a provision store along Nnebisi Road. And she is a Nursing mother .It happened one afternoon that Mr Amos rushed home to take cassava flour (Garri) and because there was no milk in the house at that particular time to’ go’ with the garri, hiy wife, asked him jokingly, if he would like to use her breast milk?

The husband, Mr Amose accepted and right from that day. It becomes a habit for him to be using his wife breast milk each time he wants to soak garri. He eventually got addicted to using the wife’s breast milk, which was mean’t for their baby for soaking garri instead of the normal milk. Now you can see that addiction impact in anything is bad! So be moderate!

Street trading: Ika South Environmental Taskforce Goes Toughough On Defaulters

The newly appointed Environmental Sanitation Taskforce in Ika South Local Government Area of Delta State on Wednesday, April 28, 2021 raided traders who flouts the government order prohibiting street trading in the area. The group with able-bodied young men took to the action following the refusal of the traders to obey the simple rule even after series of sensitization.

It could be recalled that the immediate past administration of the Local Government Council led by Hon. Barr. Victor Okoh, having built the Edike temporary market, made frantic effort to move the traders right into the market. However, the effort could not yeild the desired result as over forty-five percent of the traders still shade their wares along Odozi street amongst other streets while others who eventually moved to the Edike temporary market would shade their wears along the market walkways respectively.

The Taskforce Chairman who doubled as Special Assistant to the Governor of Delta State on Community Development, Comr. Friday Orubor, said the raiding exercise was part of their measure to further instill discipline on the market women who has refused to obey the government directive.

According to him, the Environmental Sanitation Taskforce team has gone round appealing to the traders to stop street trading as it not only create difficulties to road users, but also exposes them to danger.Meanwhile, Comr. Orubor lamented that few hours after the taskforce team had left the environment, the traders returned back to continue their trade on same walkways.Continuing, Comr. Orubor described the attitude of the traders as rebellious, explaining that they the traders would do them selves good by adhering to the directive.“We have enough space inside the market for the traders to do their businesses.

“The Local Government Council has also taken an extra effort in getting back stores from private owners having more than two spaces. All these, are to have the traders get sufficient space to sell their goods,” Comr. Orubor said.He used the medium to advice residents and market women to stop disposing their refuse into the drainage system and also encouraged them to keep their surroundings clean. He expressed gratitude to the working Governor of Delta State, Senator Dr Ifeanyi Okowa for his passion towards ensuring a clean Delta State and also commended the Ika South Council boss, Hon. Sunny Tatabuzogwu, for strongly keying into the Governor’s initiative for a cleaner and better Ika South.

In another development, the LG Environment Taskforce team met with traders of Baleke market in the Boji-Boji metropolis, appealing to them to stay clear from the market premises as reconstruction work by the state government shall commence on Monday next week.He disclosed that the project would last for 3 months as assured by the contractor in charge, pointing out that their appeal was to prevent the market traders from any casualties that may arise in the process of the job.

He also enjoined them to work in partnership with the council to clear the heaps of refuse at the market.

The women who were led by the Acting Chairman of the Baleke market, Mr. Augustine, promised to convey the message to other traders of the market while also appealing that traders should be able to get their space back at the completion of the project.

Carrot Nutrient-Dense

Reviewed by Madhu Sharma, Registered Dietitian

The carrot (Daucus carota) is a nutrient-dense root rich in antioxidants, fiber, beta carotene, and other vitamins and minerals. Research suggests that carrots may improve vision, promote skin health, and reduce the risk of some forms of cancer.

A Brief On CarrotsPeople have been eating carrots for over 5,000 years. The vegetable originated in the Middle East and Afghanistan and was initially available only in purple and yellow colors. The familiar orange carrot was developed only later, in the 1600s.

Researchers today are breeding carrots in different colors, including yellow, bright red, and dark orange to make them more appealing. But what is grabbing attention is the set of pigments in carrots that offer important benefits.

What Are The Health Benefits Of Eating Carrots?

May Promote Eye HealthVitamin A, in recommended quantities, is essential for good vision, and carrots offer the nutrient in abundance. If a person is deprived of vitamin A for too long, the outer segments of the eyes’ photoreceptors begin to deteriorate. This leads to night blindness .

Insufficient vitamin A can disrupt the normal chemical processes involved in vision. Restoring adequate vitamin A intake can facilitate vision health.

May Reduce Risk Of Cancer.Carrots contain numerous phytochemicals that are well-studied for their anticancer properties. A few of these compounds include beta-carotene and other carotenoids. These compounds promote immunity and activate certain proteins that inhibit cancer cells. Studies show that the juice from carrots can combat leukemia as well.

The carotenoids present in carrots may reduce the risk of stomach, colon, prostate, lung, and breast cancers in women

Some believe carrots may also reduce oral cancer risk. However, more research is warranted in this regard.

May Promote Skin Health.Carrots are rich in carotenoids. Research suggests that fruits and vegetables rich in these compounds can improve skin appearance and also help people look relatively younger.

However, overconsuming carrots (or other foods high in carotenoids) can result in a condition called carotenemia, wherein your skin appears yellow or orange .

May Enhance Hair Growth.Carrots are powerhouses of Vitamins A and C, carotenoids, potassium, and other antioxidants. Anecdotal evidence suggests that the veggies may contribute to hair health. However, more research is needed in this regard.May Aid Weight LossRaw, fresh carrots are about 88% water (1). A medium carrot has only about 25 calories. Hence, including carrots in your diet is a smart way of filling yourself up without piling on calories.

Carrots also contain fiber. In a study, meals containing whole and blended carrots resulted in higher satiety levels in the test subjects.

May Regulate Blood PressureOne study claimed that carrot juice contributed to a 5% reduction in systolic blood pressure. The nutrients present in carrot juice, including fiber, potassium, nitrates, and vitamin C, were found to aid this effect .May Aid Diabetes TreatmentFollowing a healthy, balanced diet and maintaining healthy weight can reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes. In studies, low blood levels of vitamin A were found in individuals with diabetes. The abnormalities in glucose metabolism would need an increased need to fight oxidative stress, and this is where the antioxidant vitamin A may help.

Carrots are high in fiber. Studies show that increased fiber intake can improve glucose metabolism in individuals with diabetes . The veggies can be added to a diabetes meal.

May Boost ImmunityVitamin A regulates the functioning of your system and prevents infections. It achieves this by boosting your body’s immunity. Get this immune-boosting vitamin from carrots. Carrots also contain vitamin C that contributes to the production of collagen, which is essential for wound healing. This nutrient further contributes to a strong immune system.May Strengthen Bones.Vitamin A influences bone cell metabolism. Carotenoids are associated with improved bone health (18). Though there is no direct research stating that carrots can help improve bone health, their vitamin A content may help. More studies are needed to further understand this mechanism.May Lower Cholesterol LevelsAs per rat studies, carrot consumption can reduce cholesterol absorption and increase the antioxidant status of your body. These effects can also promote cardiovascular health. Raw carrots are also rich in a fiber called pectin that may help lower cholesterol. Are Good For The Teeth And GumsChewing of carrots may promote oral cleanliness. Some believe carrots may also freshen breath, though there is no research to substantiate the statement. Anecdotal evidence suggests that carrots may neutralize the citric and malic acids usually left behind in your mouth, promoting oral health.May Promote Liver Health And Eliminate Toxins.Carrots contain glutathione. The antioxidant was found to have the potential to treat liver damage caused by oxidative stress . The veggies are also high in plant flavonoids and beta-carotene, both of which stimulate and support your overall liver function. The beta-carotene in carrots may also combat liver diseases.
