UNIBEN VC showers encomium on Prof. Obika at retirement

The Vice-Chancellor, University of Benin (UNIBEN), Prof. Lilian Salami, has showered encomium on the pioneer Dean, School of Basic Medical Sciences, Prof. Leonard Obika, for his meritorious service to the institution.

Salami at a public lecture and retirement celebration in honour of Obika on Wednesday, February 17 in Benin commended the commitment of the professor to development of physiological profession.

The lecture titled: ”The Aberdeen round table: Reflections on Physiology in Nigeria” aimed at how to move the profession forward using some of the exposure and opportunities from international conferences.”We must commend the commitment, scholarship and foresight of the early Nigerian physiologist in attracting and encouraging young and brilliant graduates into the physiological profession.

It is indeed a privilege that a distinguished professor of physiology and national repute is retiring from this great university. On behalf of the governing council of UNIBEN, we congratulate you sir,” he said. Prof. Henrietta Oboh, UNIBEN’s Dean, School of Basic Medical Sciences, also congratulated Obika on his 70th birthday and retirement from service.

We celebrate and acknowledge your remarkable contributions and legacies that are instrumental to the growth and success achieved in the school. We felicitate with you and identify with your tenacity for hard work, diligence and selfless service to the School of Basic Medical Sciences, UNIBEN,” she said. The Dean, therefore, wished the retiree a better future ahead and in good health.

Earlier, Prof. Akinola Alada, President, Physiological Society of Nigeria, appealed to all tiers of government to give adequate funds to the education sector. He opined that no country could achieve socio-economic growth without developing the critical sector.
