Singapore caps sugar levels in beverages

Big soft drinks companies have agreed to limit the sugar content of their drinks sold in Singapore to 12% by 2020 as part of the country’s effort to fight diabetes. Coca-Cola, PepsiCo, Singapore-based Fraser & Neave and Yeo Hiap Seng, Malaysia Dairy Industries, Nestle and Japan’s Pokka have all agreed to limit the amount of sugar they use in beverages sold in the City-State, according to the country’s ministry of health. “We are heartened to receive the strong support from industry players on sugar reduction efforts,” the ministry said. The seven firms produce 70% of all sweetened drinks sold in the country and will reduce the country’s sugar consumption by 300,000 kilograms per year, according to the health ministry. The Commissioner of Police in Delta, Mr Zanna Ibrahim, said three police officers had been dismissed from service for hijacking a petroleum tanker in the state. Ibrahim said the dismissed policemen were also being prosecuted. He disclosed this in Asaba while presenting to newsmen the culprits alongside 21 other suspects who committed various crimes ranging from kidnapping, armed robbery, car snatching, cultism and murder. He said that the dismissed policemen had served in three different places in Edo, Delta and Imo, and had connived with two civilians. Atlanta-based Coca-Cola Company, said it wants to reach out to the scientific community to find a “naturally sourced, safe, low- or no-calorie compound that creates the taste sensation of sugar when used in beverages and foods.” The grand prize is $1 million. Guinness Nigeria Plc, said it plans to broaden its participation in the value segment of the beer market as part of its strategy to return to profitability. The maker of Guinness Extra Stout made this known in a rights Issue prospectus it released to shareholders in July. The company is seeking to raise N39.7bn ($109m) to enable it optimize its capital structure and reduce outstanding debt.
