NASA scientists have definitively detected the chemical acrylonitrile in the atmosphere of Saturn's moon Titan, a place that has long intrigued scientists investigating the chemical precursors of life.
On Earth, acrylonitrile, also known as vinyl cyanide, is useful in the manufacture of plastics. Under the harsh conditions of Saturn's largest moon, this...Powered by WPeMatico
University of Delaware researchers pioneer greener way to create interwoven polymers with blue lightA pair of engineers at the University of Delaware has developed a process to form interwoven polymer networks more easily, quickly and sustainably than...Powered by WPeMatico
Genetic study identifies neuronal circuits responsible for ultrasonic calls uttered by mouse pupsThe calls of new-born mice draw the attention of their mother. A group of neuronal cells in the brain stem is essential for this process. Without these cells,...Powered by WPeMatico
To reduce process costs in industrial parts manufacturing while simultaneously improving quality, the use of diamond-coated, cemented carbide cutting tools has increased. Adhesion of diamond coatings was previously problematic, particularly when processing composite or lightweight materials. Suitable pretreatment is therefore vital. Dr. Manuel Mee of the Fraunhofer Institute for Mechanics of Materials IWM has developed a new pretreatment routine that increases the adhesion of CVD diamond to carbide: by combining several approaches into a single process, all factors which affect the adhesion of the coating can be taken into consideration, leading to a fundamental improvement of the adhesion.Today cemented carbide is the most commonly used material for industrial cutting tools. This is thank...
Structure determines function. Revealing the dynamic and structural interactions of DNA in the nucleus has been a critical missing link in genotype to phenotypeSixty-four years ago, James Watson and Francis Crick described the now-iconic double helix structure of DNA. In a new paper, published in the July 28, online...Powered by WPeMatico

The female sex hormone oestrogen protects the structural stability of bones. To date, however, it had been unclear exactly which cells were involved in the hormone’s protective function in preventing changes in bone density. Researchers at Vetmeduni Vienna were able to show for the first time that oestrogen uses a certain cell type as a “mediator” for its beneficial effects on bone. When oestrogen binds to these so-called “bone lining cells”, which cover the bone surfaces, it regulates the expression of a protein called RANKL in these cells. Oestrogen deficiency leads to uncontrolled expression of RANKL, which can trigger pathological changes in the bones. Published in Scientific Reports. The most important female sex hormone, oestrogen, plays a crucial role in the regulation of bone mass.
Important crop information can be gleaned from satellite data. A new project funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs is expected to provide further progress in this field.Securing crop production on our planet in a sustainable way is one of the big challenges of our time, also with regard to climate change. On the one hand,...Powered by WPeMatico
Spectrally narrow x-ray pulses may be “sharpened” by purely mechanical means. This sounds surprisingly, but a team of theoretical and experimental physicists developed and realized such a method. It is based on fast motions, precisely synchronized with the pulses, of a target interacting with the x-ray light. Thereby, photons are redistributed within the x-ray pulse to the desired spectral region.A team of theoretical physicists from the MPI for Nuclear Physics (MPIK) in Heidelberg has developed a novel method to intensify the spectrally broad x-ray...Powered by WPeMatico
