The executive governor of Delta State, Senator Dr Ifeanyi Okowa, Thursday, May 4,2017 at Owa-Oyibu,headquarters of Ika North East Local Government Area of the state flagged off 2017 National Immunization Plus Drugs(NIPDS) second round.Governor Okowa who was ably represented at the ceremony by the Secretary to the State Government, Hon(Barr)Festus Ovie Agas,said that his administration remains committed to providing Universal Health Care through the Delta State Contributory Health Scheme and strengthening of the Primary Health Care System through the PHC per ward strategy,stressing that the State Primary Health Care Development Agency remains her instrument for steering these targets. He added, “it is already working with other relevant government ministries,departments and agencies towards realising our dream of health for all Deltans.Be rest assured that all children between zero to nine months of age shall continue to benefit from potent vaccine administration during the campaign and at Routine Immunization session.I encourage all of us as parents, guardians and care givers to have our children and wards within the target age group vaccinated against polio disease”.
The Honourable Commissioner for Health, Dr Nicholas Azinge,who spoke through the Chairman, Delta State Primary Health Care Development Agency,DSPHCDA,Dr Richard Kofi,thanked the state governor for the high premium he is giving to the health of Deltans,saying,” you have exhibited that passion in all your endeavors as honourable commissioner for health and Senator of the federal republic, where you ensured that the National Health Bill was signed to Act in 2014.His Excellency approved the flag off of the first round campaign on March 27 this year at Ewu,in Ughelli South Local Government and now the May,2017NIPDS deserves commendation not only by us,Deltans but by the Global Community for Polio Eradication.In the first round that was implemented from March 25-28,over 8063 personnel were deployed at the local government area level to vaccinate under 5year old children and about 1,318,254(113%)children of the targeted age group were vaccinated with Potent Bivalent Oral Polio.In terms of vaccination coverage for under 5 children, the State surpassed the 90%
National Vaccination target for all Routine Vaccines.Under the committed leadership of Governor Okowa we are sure establishing a viable Health System for all time. Let us have our children and women vaccinated against the vaccine preventable diseases.”
Representatives of WHO, NIPDS,UNICEF, UN Development Agencies,in their goodwill messages commended the Delta State government for working seriously towards the eradication of polio in the state.They promised
to continue to partner with the state on polio vaccination since it has shown serious commitment.
Earlier, in his address,the Chairman, Ika North East Local Government,Hon Francis I.Eborka,said his local government recorded 100% success in the first round of NIPDS held in March. While thanking the state governor for making the health of Deltans a top priority, the Ika North East Council Boss,appealed to royal fathers,parents, heads of schools and church leaders to make the children aged 0-59months available for the vaccinators to vaccinate within the campaign period of May 6-9.”
In her vote of thanks, the first member, Delta
State Primary Health Care Development Agency, Dame(Mrs Caroline Agbi),on behalf of the board expressed gratitude to the Chairman and people of Ika North East for the huge turn out, saying the local government is the best in all the places they have visited thus far in the state.She assured that the Okowa’s administration will continue to make quality health care a top priority in the state.She called on parents and guardians to make their children or wards available for the four days exercise.
