The world's shortest race by distance -- a fraction of the width of a human hair -- was run on gold and silver tracks, and took a whopping 30 hours. Given that the vehicles were invisible to the naked eye, your typical racing fan might have missed it. But the April "nanorace" was a huge success for scientists working at the nanoscale. It spurred interest in molecular machines and led to a surprising new discovery, reports the team that entered a nano-sized "monster truck."The researchers are presenting their nanocar research today at the 254th National Meeting & Exposition of the American Chemical Society (ACS). ACS, the world's...Powered by WPeMatico

Treating arthritis with algae

Researchers at ETH Zurich, Empa and the Norwegian research institute SINTEF are pursuing a new approach to treating arthritis. This is based on a polysaccharide, a long-chain sugar molecule, originating from brown algae. When chemically modified, this "alginate" reduces oxidative stress, has an anti-inflammatory effect in cell culture tests and suppresses the immune reaction against cartilage cells, thereby combating the causes of arthritis. The research is, however, still in its infancy.Arthritis is the most-widespread joint disease, with around 90 percent of all people over 65 being affected to varying degrees, but this degenerative disease...Powered by WPeMatico

Witnessing turbulent motion in the atmosphere of a distant star

For the first time, astronomers have succeeded in obtaining a map of the turbulent motions in the atmosphere of a star other than the Sun, thanks to an innovative technique that combines three telescopes at the European Southern Observatory (ESO) on Cerro Paranal located in northern Chile. The astronomer Keiichi Ohnaka at the Universidad Católica del Norte in Antofagasta, Chile, led the research. He and his partners Gerd Weigelt and Karl-Heinz Hofmann from the Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy in Bonn, Germany obtained unprecedented velocity-resolved images of the surface and the atmosphere of a distant star. The team was able to measure the intensity (Figure 1) and velocity of the gas at each position over the surface and atmosphere of the red supergiant star...Powered by WPeMatico...

Machine control to user: Mitsubishi Electric and Fraunhofer IPT to unveil smart system for mobile devices in manufacturing

Nowadays, workers on the shop floor are required to operate increasingly complex machinery whilst reacting flexibly to any disturbances. At the EMO Metal Working Trade Fair in Hanover from 18 – 23 September in Hall 25, Booth B94, Mitsubishi Electric and the Fraunhofer Institute for Production Technology IPT will be revealing for the first time, a smart information system which will deliver information tailored to match the requirements of the job in hand, straight from the machine control unit to the machine operator. This will slash the time required by the operator to make a decision and will permit even unfamiliar tasks to be solved more swiftly and more flexibly.Costs rapidly start to mount up in production when a machine unexpectedly comes to a standstill. The onus is then on the mach

Self-powered paper-based ‘SPEDs’ may lead to new medical-diagnostic tools

A new medical-diagnostic device made out of paper detects biomarkers and identifies diseases by performing electrochemical analyses - powered only by the user's touch - and reads out the color-coded test results, making it easy for non-experts to understand."You could consider this a portable laboratory that is just completely made out of paper, is inexpensive and can be disposed of through incineration," said...Powered by WPeMatico

Such detailed images of the pathogen that causes sleeping sickness inside a host are unique so far: They illustrate the manifold ways in which the parasites move inside a tsetse fly. A research team from the University of Würzburg's Biocenter has presented the images.Single specimens of the vermicular pathogens causing sleeping sickness swim inside the gut of the tsetse fly between blood cells which the fly has ingested...Powered by WPeMatico
